Mmrk: the concept of live cinema

Mmrk is an experimental musical project active since 2009 founded by Mauro Frugiuele. Mauro performed on Night #2 at the 2019 Live Cinema Festival — see our review at “LCF 2019 – Live Performance Night #2”

I think I never heard about the concept of live cinema before V3rbo, the artist I started the Untilted.mvp project with, told me about the Live Cinema Festival in Rome.

As a cinema lover, I did some quick research to understand what it was his peculiarity. I was fascinated by the fresh concept to have a live interaction with the images that we are well used to see edited and post-produced in the cinema world. To be honest, that made me believe it is very hard to reach the emotion I would like to see in an image, where expressed in a cinematic feel.

As we approached the concept of our performance and I started to realize the sounds I wanted to develop, it immediately felt an awesome occasion to explore a form of cinema and art I didn’t saw very affirmed, in a mainstream way of speaking. I saw some very interesting expression of potential watching only the first three days at the truly awesome Palazzo delle Esposizioni.

From my personal point of view, I would have loved a direct, more Pollock-like in an unprecise way, creation and interaction with the generative flow of the images projected.

Anyway, I found some great potential in the concept of live cinema when it can be genuinely far from a simple VJ set. I felt my participation in that as a very little beginning of what our performance could get and become and what my ideas will bring to this way of expressing.
